{"id":201,"date":"2023-02-23T22:32:07","date_gmt":"2023-02-23T22:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/?p=201"},"modified":"2025-11-26T08:25:42","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T08:25:42","slug":"pieee-488-part2-the-pcb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timsretrocorner.com\/?p=201","title":{"rendered":"PIEEE-488 PART2: The PCB"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the first update to my PIEEE-488 PET dual drive project I take the breadboard design from part 1 and convert it into a PCB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The breadboard design that I came up with over Christmas and the new year (see <a href=\"https:\/?p=189\">part 1)<\/a> seemed to be pretty stable, at least as far as it went. But it suffered from the problems that all breadboard designs do, namely wires keep falling out, and after a while you start to forget which wire went where. So it was time to commit the design to a PCB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I spent a few days in KiCad reproducing the schematic  and then laying out the board. I did make a few additions in the process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Extra buttons for the drives (cos more buttons are always useful)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A reset button<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jumpers to enable\/disable the buzzers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A PCB header to duplicate the IEEE connector (allowing for use of a ribbon cable, or a diagnostics board etc)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replace the Power &amp; Error LEDs with a single bicolour LED (cos bicolour LEDs are cool!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add configuration solder pads for the OLED display<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"804\" src=\"https:\/\/timsretrocorner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-01-23-at-08.40.39-1024x804.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timsretrocorner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-01-23-at-08.40.39-1024x804.png 1024w, https:\/\/timsretrocorner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-01-23-at-08.40.39-300x236.png 300w, https:\/\/timsretrocorner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-01-23-at-08.40.39-768x603.png 768w, https:\/\/timsretrocorner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-01-23-at-08.40.39-1536x1206.png 1536w, https:\/\/timsretrocorner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Screenshot-2023-01-23-at-08.40.39-2048x1608.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">KiCad 3D render of the PCB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the design and layout had been checked, it was time to produce Gerber files and send them off to my sponsor for the video, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcbway.com\">PCBWay<\/a>  (although they sponsored the video, I did pay for the boards myself). It cost me just $5 for 10 boards (plus shipping &#8211; a range of options to suit different budgets and timeframes). The upload process is easy, and once they&#8217;ve checked the Gerber files for errors, you simply pay and wait for the delivery driver to knock at your door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had already sourced components for the breadboard build, making sure to buy spares. So once the boards arrived there was no hanging around: it was out with the soldering iron. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And ok, I did make a couple of n00b errors when I specced out the board (I used the wrong footprint for the bicolour LED, and I got the pinout of the centroids connector backwards. But those were simple enough to work around (and easy to fix for the next revision of the PCB).
